FINAL FANTASY IV
WATERHAG PROJECT #654 CREATED: JULY 2020 The WaterHag was a dangerous, humanoid fish-like monster. While its cousin, the Sand Man, was adapted for dry climates, the WaterHag preferred environments that were moist and humid. They were not uncommon foes within the cavern of the Octomamm, sometimes traveling with a TinyMage for some much-needed magic support. In the village of Kaipo, Edward Chris von Muir was ambushed by a lone WaterHag in the middle of the night, promoting Edward to summon up his spoony bard courage and defeat the monster by himself. A WaterHag was also among the monsters who attacked the castle of Fabul, bursting through the defenses with an Imp Cap. and a Weeper to battle defenders within the castle walls. (In the Game Boy Advance remake of Final Fantasy IV, the WaterHag was renamed Sahagin. These guys have been part of the video game series since the beginning; related baddies include the Sahag, from the original 8-bit Final Fantasy for NES, as well as the Merman, appearing in Final Fantasy III for the Famicom in Japan.) To construct a WaterHag, I started with the Phibious action figure from the Matt Hatter Chronicles toy line produced in Great Britain. It's a franchise I'd never heard of before, but I did an online search for sea monster toys, and the Phibious figure was perfect for this project. I sculpted some new dorsal fins for him, as well as a new set of lips, baking them out of Sculpey and gluing them in place afterwards. Aside from that, all I had to do was paint the figure. (I probably could have gotten away with not painting him, since he was already so close to the look of the original game sprite!) |
