FINAL FANTASY IV
RED D. PROJECT #612 CREATED: SEPTEMBER 2018 Some of the most powerful dragons in existence lived not on Earth, but on the Moon. The Red Dragon was an ancient and potentially deadly creature who dwelled deep within the naturally-occurring passages beneath the lunar surface. They were a common monster encountered by Cecil Harvey and his followers during the last leg of their journey through the lunar core. Red Dragons were so large and dangerous that they could strike at a foe twice before its opponent could even react, lashing out with its teeth, claws, and tail. While Red Dragons were protected with armored skin and were resistant to most conventional attacks, they were not invulnerable to magic. They were particularly susceptible to spells like Ice-3 or the holy spell of White. One curious trick Red Dragons employed was their ability to effectively disguise their true numbers. Even after finally managing to destroy one, Cecil sometimes found that another identical dragon was lurking in the shadows, waiting to strike. (In the Super Nintendo version of Final Fantasy IV, monster names could only have eight alphanumeric characters, so the Red Dragon's name was shortened to Red D. Why they didn't just call him RedDragn is not known to me.) When I started looking for dragon toys to repaint into the Red D. (and his cousins the Blue D. and D.Machin), I found that the Schleich brand forest dragon was pretty close to what I was looking for. I did modify the jaws so that they were open, and I also sculpted new armor plating for the front of his neck. That was about it for the intended physical modifications, though one side effect of baking him in the oven was that his wings began to droop at a more natural-looking angle. I could have undone this, but I liked the change so I kept it. The paint job consists of several layers of varying shades. I gave him a dark brown paint wash to bring out the detail in the sculpt, and I dry brushed him with orange and then yellow to create more of a color gradient. |
