PREDAKING (ROBOT HEROES)
PROJECT #437 CREATED: 2009 "Few Decepticons can stand up to the Dinobots—but the Predacons can! The Predacons not only transform into robots, but into one gigantic robot—Predaking!" I loved the Robot Heroes toy line so much that I was even willing to pay inflated eBay prices to acquire some of the figures who were never made available for sale in the United States. Predaking was one of the toys that was planned by Hasbro for the American market, only to see limited distribution in the United Kingdom and Singapore. I actually ended up with two Predaking figures (one was available in a lot with the Robot Heroes Prowl I really wanted), which gave me an opportunity to paint one and resell it. The factory paint scheme was either somewhat bad or incredibly bad, depending on which version of Predaking you got (there are at least two official paint schemes, one of which leaves a lot more of the toy unpainted). Anyway, he definitely needed some new colors, and I needed to recoup some of the money I spent on Robot Heroes Prowl. Two birds, one stone. (Well, one bird, two cats, and two ungulates. But you get the idea.) For this project, I stuck to the colors of the original Hasbro toy from 1986. (The animation model for Predaking had considerably different colors, as it turns out.) The sculpt does borrow elements from the cartoon model, like the super-long shoulder cannons, but I feel like I kept things true to the spirit of the original toy. I ended up painting every surface on the figure, including numerous tiny details like the eyes and tongues (?!) on the animal heads. |
