FINAL FANTASY IV
DARK IMP PROJECT #596 CREATED: FEBRUARY 2018 The reclusive Dark Imp was a meaner, nastier variety of Imp that dwelled exclusively within the caverns and tunnels of the Underground, the secret, hidden world beneath the surface of the Earth. They patrolled the subterranean landscape, often in packs of four, looking for unsuspecting Dwarves or other travelers to accost. Sometimes they even travelled with a trained Tortoise, ostensibly conditioned by the Dark Imps to do their nefarious bidding. Three such Dark Imps were placed in charge of the Super Cannon inside the Tower of Bab-il, primed to destroy King Giott and his kingdom of peaceful Dwarves—prompting Cecil and his crew to confront them and destroy them to try to prevent the attack on the Dwarf homestead. (The Dark Imp was renamed the Goblin Captain in the Game Boy Advance remake of Final Fantasy IV.) I had to make some aesthetic choices when it came time to paint these guys. I wanted to stay as close to the look and feel of the original sprites as possible, but this would have resulted in things like their boots and shoulder pauldrons being the exact same color as their flesh tone. To some extent, I followed the color choices made for the PlayStation Portable sprites. I have always though those were ears protruding from their hats, not horns, so I kept those the same color as their skin. (Authenticity is very important to me, but there were hard limits to the number of colors possible with a 16-bit game sprite, so I had to take that into consideration, too.) |
