A BUTTERFLY'S TALE:
THE LOST TREASURE OF TORLYNN MARIPOSA (LEGO) PROJECT #540 CREATED: 2015 "Oh, my sweet, darling Four! To think that after all that's happened... the war between the Dwarves and the Elves... the exodus of the Giant... all this time, the one thing you were worried about the most was whether I loved you!" Mariposa is the main character of my ever-growing Butterfly Princess e-book series. I created the character for my wife, and mainly write the books so she has something to read on her Kindle (the fact that I publish them online is entirely incidental, you understand). I've already done a standard action figure version of her, but since my wife's birthday was coming up, and she's been into LEGO lately, I thought it would be fun to try to build a LEGO version of Mariposa. I had a specific idea of what I wanted Mariposa's mini-figure to look like, so I ordered each individual part piecemeal on eBay, selecting this particular head, that particular hair, etc. until I had assembled a complete figure. I decided to add a three-dimensional aspect to the figure, cutting tiny armor panels out of thin plastic and painting them with a suncatcher paint so that they were semi-translucent when dry. This made her armor look like it was made out of gemstones. Her wings are a single piece of clear plastic, also painted with semi-translucent paint, that slides over her neck post. As an accessory, I built a tiny version of Normal, the rainbow-colored butterfly from The Curse of the Fate Shifter. I made it from a MegaBloks accessory and is entirely hand-painted. Years ago, when I first painted LEGO mini-figures, I broke all the existing rules and painted parts that LEGO never did, like arms, legs, etc. Now, of course, they do it all the time. Sure makes you wonder! |
