FINAL FANTASY IV
FATALEYE PROJECT #602.1 CREATED: MAY 2018 REVISED: MARCH 2020 The FatalEye was one of the most potentially lethal creatures on the Moon, at least to those who failed to employ an effective combat strategy against them. The FatalEye, seemingly a distant cousin to the terrestrial FloatEye and Red Eye, lived deep within the Lunar Subterrane. Orange with purple wings, this bizarre-looking creature was capable of summoning a magical Fatal attack, which gave his unfortunate victim approximately ten seconds to continue living. After the clock finished ticking down, the victim's life was claimed instantly, regardless of his strength or vitality. Countering the attack with the Slow spell was a good strategy, but it only postponed the inevitable. The FatalEye wasn't particularly choosy about whom he attacked in this manner, and would sometimes start the countdown over again on the same victim—thus providing him with another precious ten seconds to remain alive. (The FatalEye was renamed Veteran for the PlayStation Portable version of Final Fantasy IV, and called Ahriman in the Game Boy Advance edition.) I built the FatalEye (and the other three monsters from the Super Nintendo version of the game who share this game sprite design) out of a Mike Wazowski toy from a 2005 McDonald's promotion. I had to cut off the horns on the toy's head, remove a toe from each foot (which ended up becoming the claw on the back of each foot), and cut the arms off. These guys have a weird lizard-like tail, so I took four brontosaurus toys and cut their tails off. They were hollow, so I grafted part of the dinosaur's back to the toy as well to help hold it in place. The wings were originally from the "flying creature" monster from the Kong: Skull Island toy line. I cut them off and attached them to Mike Wazowski with a combination of super glue and screws. A couple of years later, I rebuilt this project, adding the wings from a Hookfang toy from How to Train Your Dragon instead. He also got a better, more detailed paint job. |
