FINAL FANTASY IV
D. FOSSIL PROJECT #570 CREATED: JUNE 2017 The D. Fossil could be found in the Lunar Subterrane, the last lunar dungeon that Cecil Harvey and friends explored before their final confrontatin with Zemus. Skeletal in nature and orange in color, it was a powerful creature, resistant to most low-level attacks and capable of a Curse attack that potentially rendered opponents helpless. Cecil and his companions frequently encountered these creatures when venturing into the depths of the Moon, occasionally with a Warlock that may have successfully tamed it to do his bidding. (Due to the alphanumeric character limits in the Super Nintendo version of the game, the monster's name was abbreviated to D. Fossil. It was likely short for Dinosaur Fossil; in the Game Boy Advance version, the creature was called a Dinozombie.) To create the D. Fossil and the other monsters using the same game sprite template (D. Bone and D. Lunar), I bought three Geoworld brand "Jurassic Egg" Stygimoloch puzzle toys. Obviously, the real-life three-dimensional model isn't in exactly the same pose as the D. Fossil sprite, but that's due in part to the way the various monster sprites were limited to appearing in fairly enclosed square or rectangle shapes (so that they could be squished together on a sprite map). I'm sure if the D. Fossil had been allowed to stretch his legs a bit, he'd look a little more like this. When I first played this name, I always referred to this guy as Doctor Fossil, a dinosaur villain from an episode of Darkwing Duck. And now that's stuck in your brain forever. |
