TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES
SHREDDER (LEGO) PROJECT #240 CREATED: 2002 "'Stick with me,' you said, 'and I'll make you a big man.' Some 'big man'!" This was a silly project that it took a long time for me to actually get around to doing. There was a time when there were no official Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles construction sets, or mini-figures, of any kind. Eventually, MegaBloks secured the licensed in 2003, just in time for the 4Kids reboot series. A little while later, LEGO produced several official building sets, but most of them were based on either the Michael Bay live-action film or the Nickelodeon reboot series. It wasn't until MegaBloks picked up the license for the second time that they finally started producing building sets and figures based on the classic TMNT cartoon from the 1980's. Before all of this happened, though, I was determined to build some hypothetical LEGO figures that followed some of the unwritten rules (yellow flesh tones, constructed entirely from existing LEGO parts) and totally defied some of the other rules (back in the day, there were never, ever paint applications on the arms or legs of LEGO minifigures; I was doing it way before it was trendy). I build the helmet out of a LEGO samurai helmet and some other parts. For the chest muscle details and the armor on his arms and legs, I scored the lines with a sharp hobby knife, which distorted the shape of the plastic just slightly that it helped the paint to cooperate and stay within the lines. I've also done a LEGO figure of April O'Neil, so Shredder has somebody to capture once a week. |
