FINAL FANTASY IV
JELLY PROJECT #576 CREATED: AUGUST 2017 The frightening and unusual Jelly creatures were a decidedly non-conventional monster encountered by Cecil during his travels. Found within the Watery Pass leading to Damcyan, the Jelly could not be destroyed by conventional means. No form of melee attack could effectively damage their gelatinous forms; only a direct magical attack proved effective in destroying them. Tellah's ability to cast fire-based spells proved most useful when encountering the Jelly, as it did the kind of wholesale damage to them that the blade of a sword simply could not. (In the PlayStation Portable version of the game, the Jelly were instead referred to as Red Mousse. Indeed, they were a much more striking red color in that game.) There are five other types of enemies in Final Fantasy IV that share a sprite design with the Jelly, so in order to build them, I needed a toy that was appropriate in design, but which I could also find in abundance. I remembered the Pearl jellyfish from the McDonald's Finding Nemo promotion from years past, and found an eBay seller who actually had six of them available. (And then I melted two of them and had to buy replacements, but that's another story.) The toy was designed to both light up and squirt water, but I neutered the gimmicks because I didn't require them to have this kind of functionality. I used my airbrush kit to give the Jelly multiple shades of color, enabling me to give him the different hues that were incorporated into his 16-bit game sprite. |
