FINAL FANTASY IV
CAVE BAT PROJECT #621 CREATED: JANUARY 2019 After an evil force took hold of the Kingdom of Baron, creatures all around the world began to turn sinister. One of them was the normally-docile Cave Bat, which began attacking anything that ventured into its domain. Cecil Harvey and company were forced to contend with numerous Cave Bats while venturing into the depths of Cave Magnes. While the bats were not a lethal threat, they tended to bite members of Cecil's group on sight, making them a major nuisance. They could often be found within close proximity to the VampGirl, depending on her for protection. They also dwelled within Cave Eblana, often in mixed colonies with GiantBats. Oddly, Cave Bats were strongly resistant to Lightning-based magic attacks, forcing adventurers to use alternate forms of attack to defeat them. (The Cave Bat is one of the few monsters from the Super Nintendo version of Final Fantasy IV that kept its original name across the various platforms and remakes.) To make the Cave Bat (as well as the Were Bat and GiantBat), I used the Papo brand plastic bat figurine from their "Wild Animals" series. It's got a roughly four-inch wingspan, making it a reasonable in-scale threat to a five-inch-tall action figure. The only physical modification I had to make was to drill a hole in the bottom of the bat to attach the figure stand. Everything else is paint, which I layered in slightly different colors to try to match the look of the 16-but Super Nintendo game sprite. The figure stand is actually the plastic stick from a push-up frozen sherbet treat, turned upside-down. (At some point I need to sculpt the base to make it look like the cavern floor.) |
