FINAL FANTASY IV
RED BONE PROJECT #638 CREATED: OCTOBER 2019 What's even scarier than a reanimated human skeleton? That's right... a reanimated human skeleton still covered in blood! The Red Bone, as it was colloquially known, was likely more recently-deceased than its compatriot Skelton or Skull warriors, as it was still coated with a fresh, shiny veneer—the last vestiges of the living tissue that once covered its body. As Cecil and his friends would discover on Mt. Ordeals, destroying them required special tactics. Curative magic and items were especially effective against this unholy menace. (Nintendo of America tended to shy away from references to death or blood when Final Fantasy IV was originally released. Some years later when the game was remade for Game Boy Advance, the Red Bone was renamed Bloodbones, which is closer to the original Japanese name for this monster.) To create the Red Bone (as well as the Skelton and the Skull, who all share the same game sprite design) I started with Aracula from the 1990's Skeleton Warriors toy line. He required a lot of structural work to bring him up to snuff. In addition to getting rid of his extra arms (and plugging up the resultant holes), I also did some major rebuilding of his face (he originally looked really monkey-like), shortened his limbs and spinal column, and adjusted the position of his limbs so he could hold his sword with both hands. I armed him with a cutlass from the My Little Pony: the Movie toy line, after reversing the direction of the blade so that the finger guard was facing the right direction. His chest armor is made from a WWE "Create-A-Superstar" knight pack, his shoulder pads are made from some plastic spoons, and the boots are hand-sculpted. |
