FINAL FANTASY IV
GREMLIN PROJECT #646 CREATED: MARCH 2020 Gremlins were mischevious pranksters known for their tendency to sabotage machinery. Cid Pollendina often half-jokingly blamed Gremlins for being responsible for the various malfunctions his airships suffered on occasion. Cecil Harvey and his group would eventually encounter some Gremlins while journeying through the mechanical Tower of Zot, and Cid finally got to meet these creatures first-hand. Whether they were naturally drawn to the technology of the Tower is not known. They sometimes patrolled the corridors with an IceLiz or two, but like all monsters within the Tower of Zot, they were easily destroyed with Fire-based magic. Just don't get them wet, and don't feed them after midnight! To build an action figure of the Gremlin (and the Fiend, who shares a game sprite design), I started with the 1996 Feral Imp action figure from Mattel's Yu-Gi-Oh! toy line. He got a total structural rebuild, including new boots, a resculpted face, and replacement wings. I also added new joints to the arms so he could more closely assume the pose from his game sprite. The reason he's wearing glasses is because of the way I've always interpreted his Super Nintendo game sprite. For the PlayStation Portable edition of the character, the graphic designers went back to the original Yoshitaka Amano concept art and added more detail not visible in the oldetr 16-bit game sprite. One of those details is a weird thing hanging off his belt. What was it? Was it a salt shaker? I consulted the concept art and realized it was in fact a tiny doll with a tiny face. How sadistic! I was so tickled by this prospect that I simply had to include it. |
