FINAL FANTASY IV
OGRE PROJECT #624 CREATED: FEBRUARY 2019 Ogres were huge, powerful creatures with a nasty disposition. They tended to shy away from human civilization, sequestering themselves within dark caverns, though they had a reputation for devouring small children. When the rest of the creatures in the world succumbed to Golbez's sinister machinations, the Ogres fared no better. Cecil Harvey and his followers would encounter Ogres—sometimes in packs of three—when exploring the caverns of Cave Magnes. Panthers, CaveNagas, and Mages were among the smaller creatures who would seek solace near the gigantic Ogres, recognizing the relative safety of remaining nearby them. These green-skinned creatures had incredible physical strength, and could take a huge amount of punishment in combat. Compounding the problem was that the Dark Elf dwelling deep within Cave Magnes had total control over ferrous objects within the cavern. This meant that warriors like Cecil were unable to use his swords and armor to combat fierce monsters like the Ogres—at least, not until the Dark Elf was defeated. For both the Ogre and Mad Ogre (who share a game sprite design), I started with a 12" Incredible Hulk figure from the Avengers Titan Heroes series. I knew he would need to have rooted hair that could fall over his shoulders, so I bought a couple of Barbie dolls in order to scalp them and give the Hulk a hair transplant (and a haircut). The Ogre is stout, with disproportionately short legs, so I cut the legs off, whittled them down, and reattached them. I did the same with the torso to shorten the length of the body as well. I also did some minor cosmetic surgery to the face, removing the left eye and positioning it lower on the face (from his original game sprite, the Ogre seems to have asymmetrical eyes) and giving him some ugly teeth. I knew I would need to make some soft goods for the Ogre to wear, so I bought some fabric, designed a pattern for his toga, and stitched it together by hand, dirtying it up with paint afterwards. The belt is a piece of elastic that I also painted. Giving the Ogre nipples wasn't the craziest thing I've ever done to an action figure. But using some of the leftover Barbie hair and gluing the individual strands to his chest and arms might very well be. |
