FINAL FANTASY IV
MACGIANT PROJECT #582 CREATED: SEPTEMBER 2017 The mechanical inner workings of the massive Giant of Bab-il were guarded by some potent roving machines, but none so fierce as the dreaded MacGiant. Patrolling the corridors of the huge, walking weapon, this machine giant operated alone or sometimes in pairs, and was occasionally summoned by a Searcher to deal with threats to internal security such as Cecil Harvey and his group. The MacGiant was very tough to beat, using a Magnet attack that could immobilize its opponents. While not as dangerous as its distant cousin, the RedGiant, the MacGiant was still a difficult force to overcome. (The enemy was renamed Giant Soldier in the Game Boy Advance remake of Final Fantasy IV.) I needed a toy I could turn into both the MacGiant and the RedGiant, so I picked the Rhino action figure from the Spider-Man Titan Heroes series, which happened to be in stores at the time. I added a lot of stuff to the toy to try to match the enemy game sprite. The cannon arm and claw arm are from the Transformers 1985 Omega Supreme toy. I cut off Rhino's face and smoothed out the gap with Sculpey, cutting off the spikes from his removable shoulder pads for use as horns. I drilled holes into his body to attach the faux wiring, which was made from various rubber tubes and stretchy elastic cords. (The hardest part, honestly, was having to make all of these changes twice, and in exactly the same way, to build both the MacGiant and the RedGiant.) I used my airbrush for some color gradients on his horns, claws, etc. to try to replicate the way his original game sprite uses different shades of blue. |
