FINAL FANTASY IV
SANDMOTH PROJECT #629 CREATED: MAY 2019 The SandMoth was one of the earliest creatures encountered by Cecil and Kain during their travels, following their exile from Baron Castle. The SandMoths were plentiful on the road to the Misty Cave as well as the trails leading to the Town of Mist itself. They could also be found living in the Kaipo and Damcyan deserts, usually accompanied by one of their younger Larvae. True to its name, the SandMoth left a trail of sand-like wing dust everywhere it flew. It could also use this as a defense mechanism, flapping its wings in order to blind opponents with the naturally-formed wing dust. They were weak, however, and were easily destroyed in battle. (In the original Japanese version of the game, the monsters were referred to as the Flying Eye, a reference to the pattern on its wings. It was renamed Eyewing Moth for the Nintendo DS remake of Final Fantasy IV.) I made the SandMoth (as well as the RockMoth and the elusive GlomWing) out of a Blue Morpho Butterfly from Safari, Ltd., which had nice, large wings. I glued pieces of plastic to the wings for the eyeball shape, which served as a painting guide and also allowed me to get the eyes the same size on all three projects. I used my airbrush to achieve the light-to-dark gradient on the wings, and painted the rest by hand. I did not, however, have a practical way of depicting the wing dust flying off the monsters, so use your imagination for that! |
