FINAL FANTASY IV
D. BONE PROJECT #569 CREATED: JUNE 2017 D. Bone was among the many roving, aggressive creatures that existed within the depths of the subterranean caverns on the Moon. Living both within Cave Bahamut as well as the Lunar Subterrane proper, they occasionally appeared alongside a Warlock, who may have learned to tame and control them. They could poison party members during battle, most likely with a bite from their skeletal teeth. Despite the fact that they possessed the strength of some of the game's earliest mini-bosses, by the time Cecil and company encountered ay D. Bones, his group had grown in power to the point where they could be dispatched easily. The D. Bone was an animated dinosaur skeleton, quite possibly undead, which makes you wonder just what sort of creature it was back when it was alive. (The truncated name D. Bone, as it appeared in Final Fantasy IV for Super Nintendo, was revised to Bone Dragon for the Game Boy Advance port.) After I decided I wanted to start doing projects based on the monsters of Final Fantasy IV, I found three of these dinosaur skeletons in an eBay lot for about six bucks apiece. The Stygimoloch was a really good match for the Bone Dragon and his sprite-mates; I especially liked the shape of the head crest. I didn't make any physical modifications to the kit; all I did was paint the thing. I used several shades of purple, both to create the illusion of depth and also to try to closely match the actual sprite colors used, so that this project would emulate the 16-bit color mapping used in the game. Of the three original versions of this sprite, I think I like the Bone Dragon the best, if only 'coz he's purple. I lo-oo-oo-ve purple. |
