FINAL FANTASY IV
MEDUSA PROJECT #677 CREATED: JANUARY 2024 The Medusa was a creature who appeared at first glance to be a beautiful woman—but in place of hair, she had snakes whose gaze could turn people to stone. Patrolling the Tower of Bab-il, Medusa could often be found traveling with a Stoneman, arguably the only such companion naturally immune to her deadly powers, as they were already made of stone. Medusa also roamed the plains of the Underground, which may have been her natural habitat. Cecil Harvey and his companions tangled with the Medusa on occasion, quickly discovering that her Ray attack could systematically petrify their body parts, one at a time, until they became completely immobilized. It was up to Cecil and crew to cut her down to size, and give her a really bad hair day! (Where many monsters were assigned alternate names in the various remakes of Final Fantasy IV for other game systems, Medusa—named after the creature in Greek mythology—has always remained Medusa.) I wanted Medusa to look as close as possible to the game sprite, barefoot and wearing a dress, preferrably. The Ghostubsters Dana Barrett action figure seemed perfect. (I put the bottom of the dress on backwards, and cut the opening so she could show a bit more leg.) McFarlane Toys produced a Medusa action figure as part of the Spawn toy line, so I was able to transplant the head for this project. The larger snakes have wiring in them so they're poseable, which is great. The arms are from an Evil-Lyn action figure from MOTU Origins, but I still used the original Dana Barrett hands. I tried to capture the SNES game sprite colors as closely as possible, though I did choose to interpret the braces on her arms and legs as being gold instead of the same tan color as her dress. I used a toothpick to paint all those little snake eyeballs. |
