FINAL FANTASY IV
HOOLIGAN PROJECT #630 CREATED: JUNE 2019 Hooligans were creatures indigenous to the Land of Summoned Monsters. These demonic, winged beasts took flight with their powerful wings and then descended upon their prey, attacking with claws and beaks and barbed tails. Similar in appearance to Gargoyles, it is unknown if Hooligans were naturally-occurring creatures or if they were also stone statues that had been brought to life with magic. In any event, Hooligans often traveled in pairs, and defended the Land of Summoned Monsters from invaders. By the time Cecil Harvey and his team arrived, the Hooligans were not a significant impediment to his progress during the few times they encountered each other. (The Hooligan was renamed Belphegor for the Game Boy Advance remake of Final Fantasy IV.) To build the Hooligan (and the Gargoyle, who shares a game sprite), I started with the Disney Gargoyles toy named Brooklyn. He had this silly gimmick where his mouth wiggled a little when you pulled a lever on his back, so I gutted the gimmick and built a Sculpey plug to fill up the hole where the lever used to be. I did the same thing for the gap that remained after I cut his hair off. I replaced his original hands with ones from a DragonBall Z figure. I also replaced the original wings with smaller, better ones from a Funko Pop! figure of another Gargoyles character. I figured that if I cut his head off, I could reattach it and give him a proper neck. I also realized that while I was doing this, I could open his jaws to give him a more menacing appearance. I did keep the loincloth from the original action figure. The Super Nintendo game sprite vaguely suggests the presence of a belt (even if it's not colored that way) while the redesigned PlayStation Portable game sprite is quite unabashedly naked. |
