FINAL FANTASY IV
ALIGATOR PROJECT #666 CREATED: JUNE 2022 The vicious Aligator was among the normal, everyday creatures one might encounter while exploring some of the underground aqueducts beneath Baron and the surrounding lands. It was most commonly found in the deeper levels of the Watery Pass en route to Damcyan, typically thrashing around in the water and looking for Pike to fill its belly. They could also be found near the waterfall within the Octomann's lair, or within the Old Water-way leading to Baron. While the Aligator appeared to be a dangerous creature, they were highly susceptible to Ice-based magic. Freezing the water in which they dwelled was a surefire way of eliminating these potential predators. (The name Aligator, with one "L," was misspelled due to Final Fantasy IV's hard limit of eight alphanumeric characters for the names of monsters, at least for the Super Nintendo release. The same creature was called Alligator with two "L's" in the Game Boy Advance adaptation, and simply Gator in the PlayStation Portable remake.) I really liked the Schleich brand crocodile for this project, since it had an articulated jaw and a realistic, lifelike sculpt. I ended up painting the Aligator a dark blue and then drybrushing a lighter shade of blue on top to bring out the surface detail. His belly was airbrushed a dark yellow color, to which I applied a paint wash afterwards. I also painted darker blue spots to try to match the look of the 16-bit Super Nintendo game sprite. (I took some liberties and painted the inside of his mouth pink, despite this color not appearing in the SNES version due to color limitations.) |
