FINAL FANTASY IV
CAL PROJECT #658 CREATED: OCTOBER 2020 In the palace of the Dwarves living in the Underground, there lived a Dwarven princess named Luca. She lived a carefree life, largely content to play with her dolls. Little did she suspect that the dolls themselves would become servants of Golbez, turning on her and even attacking the new friends who had come to visit her realm from the world above. The male Cal dolls, along with the female Brena dolls, danced around Cecil Harvey and his companions, taunting them and laughing, before merging together to form the gigantic and dangerous Calbrena fusion. Cecil's team destroyed the dolls. In time, Luca would find other playthings, but she never forgot her beloved dancing dolls. (The original intended name of the combined doll, Calcobrena, was shortened in the Super Nintendo release of Final Fantasy IV; the original name for the male doll, Calco, was likewise shortened to Cal. It was restored in later remakes.) To construct the Cal doll (along with the Brena doll as well as the EvilDoll and Puppet, all of whom share a game sprite in the 16-bit version) I used an articulated artist's figurine sold on eBay under the name Figma Body Kun. It's already built like a doll, with segmented joints, so it was the perfect choice. I popped off all the ball joints and dyed them black, because I knew model paint would just scrape right off those joints. I painted the entire figure purple first, then went back and gave it an incomplete paint job in blue and skin tones, to make the doll look aged and damaged. I made him slightly wall-eyed, too, which I think nicely adds to the creepy factor. |
