FINAL FANTASY IV
GLOMWING PROJECT #627 CREATED: MAY 2019 Most entymologists of Baron know that one of the most rare and beautiful insects in the world is the elusive GlomWing. Cecil Harvey happened upon a nest of them, purely by chance, when exploring a small patch of isolated land in the hidden Underground. It was the same area where the rare Talantla and Gorgon were also known to dwell. Superficially, the GlomWing was no different from the RockMoth or SandMoth in appearance, though it tended to be more yellow and brown in color. It often traveled with the TrapRose or Crawler, all native to the Underground. It was highly resistant to Lightning-based magic, although arrows were usually more than sufficient to pierce its delicate wings and send it spiralling into the magma pits of the Underground realm. (GlomWing is a highly truncated and fairly nonsensical name, shortened from its original name, Gloom Wing. It got a more sensible name for the Game Boy Advance remake of Final Fantasy IV. Like a number of other monsters from the game, the creature owes its origins to the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game.) I needed three large, winged insects to make the GlomWing (as well as the RockMoth and the SandMoth, who all share a game sprite design) so I used a Blue Morpho Butterfly figurine manufactured by Safari, Ltd. One omission made by the original S-NES game sprite was the lack of legs on the insects (the revised PlayStation Portable game sprite amended this anatomical oversight). I made sure to include the legs on my version, which are made from paper clips. The antennae are pipe cleaners. I used the stick from a push-up ice cream treat as a figure stand. |
