FINAL FANTASY IV
BRENA PROJECT #659 CREATED: OCTOBER 2020 The dancing Brena dolls were originally beautiful mechanical creations, the playthings of the young Dwarf princess, Luca. After the dolls were tampered with in order to serve Golbez and his evil purposes, Cecil Harvey and his band of followers were forced to do battle against the small army of diminutive toys, inside the crystal room of the Dwarven castle. The female Brena dolls had also been given the ability to combine their bodies together with the male Cal dolls into a gigantic monstrosity known as Calbrena, which presented a considerably more significant threat. In the end, the dolls were defeated, arguably one of the most bizarre fights Cecil had ever endured. (The Brena dolls were also called Brina in some of the Final Fantasy IV remakes.) This project was an interesting challenge because there are multiple character designs for the Brena doll. In Yoshitaka Amano's original control art, there are male and female dolls, with the female dolls wearing dresses. This design was simplified for the original release of Final Fantasy IV, and all the dolls shared an identical look. In the PlayStation Portable remake of the game, the Brena's game sprite was changed to reflect something closer to Yoshitaka's original vision, but then this change was undone for the Nintendo DS release. For now, I kept Brena looking like her 16-bit game sprite. To paint the doll, I made her brown at first and then painted over most of that in orange and light flesh tones to make it appear like the original paint job was flaking off. I thought it would be fun to give her a wonky eyeball, which is held on with a piece of string. Maybe some day I'll make a dress for her and give her some rooted hair. Shrug. |
