FINAL FANTASY IV
ARMADILO PROJECT #662 CREATED: FEBRUARY 2022 After the influence of the evil Golbez began to spread throughout the world, creatures that were normally tame and docile became hostile and aggressive. Animals such as the Armadilo would uncharacteristically attack on sight, posing a problem for traveling adventurers. The Armadilo's natural habitat was the Underground, often traveling in pairs, or with a BlackLiz or Tortoise. They also took up residence within Cave Eblana, sometimes keeping company with their cousin, the Ironback. By the time Cecil Harvey and his group reached the areas where the Armadilo dwelled, however, they were more than adequately equipped to deal with these creatures. (The original Japanese name for these monsters was closer to Armored Mammal, which makes sense considering the creatures look more like pangolins than armadillos. Despite this, they retained the same name throughout all versions of Final Fantasy IV.) In order to make my version of the Armadilo-with-one-L (as well as the Ironback, who shares a game sprite), I started with a pangolin figurine made by Safari, Ltd. I did add a little tongue to the animal (made from Scumbug antenna from the old Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles toy line) and I glued some spikes to the end of the tail (made from the claws from a How To Train Your Dragon toy). I thought about doing a massive amount of work to cut the tail into segments, and then glue the parts back together so that the tail was in a curved position to match the game sprite. But, the only reason he's curled up like that in the first place was so his sprite could fit neatly into rectangular box shape on the sprite map. So, I didn't do that. Lazy, or just efficient? You decide! |
